Though the claim is tongue-in-cheek, P. Diddy’s album title We Invented the Remix still smells of methane. The barest notion of the remix, the manipulation of source material to create a significantly altered or wholly different work, goes way back — even the Bible didn’t drop from the heavens in one piece.
On Thursday, May 21, RiP: A Remix Manifesto hits town with no rights reserved. The Brett Gaylor-helmed documentary – which features Gilberto Gil, Gregg Gillis of Girl Talk, and author/blogger Cory Doctorow – stresses how creative takes on existing works of art and music have enhanced our lives. RiP, which cautions against corporations holding copyrights forever, definitely walks the walk. A result of multiple remixers, the flick is available online for digital manipulators.
