There’s nothing wrong with knocking a few back on what’s become a beloved drinking holiday, but there are plenty of other ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. For instance, you might try checking out the work of noted Mexican playwright Emilio Carballido in the Foundation fo Latin-American Arts’ production of Rosa de Dos Aromas.
Carballido, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 82, was part of a group of Mexican writers known as Generación de los 50, which counted lauded writers Rosario Castellanos, Sergio Galindo, and Jaime Sabines among its members. Rosas begins with a chance meeting between two seemingly different women, Gabriela, a divorced mother of three, and Marlene, an unmarried hairdresser. Both seek to free their respective lover from jail and let’s just say that find they have much in common.
