Nightowls, film fiends, and underagers alike can celebrate additions and changes in the works at Downtown’s FilmBar.
Kelly Aubey, who owns the independent theater/bar at 815 North Second Street announced this week that next month, FilmBar will be screening midnight movies from Thursday through Saturday, sell tickets online, and lower the age requirement for admission and service to people 18 and over.
Aubey opened the theater in 2010 with a mission to showcase independent, foreign, art house, cult and classic films.
“I want to challenge the conceptions of what is normal,” he told Jackalope Ranch when FilmBar opened. “[An indie theater] is healthy, especially in this state.”
The theater has since partnered with AIGA to host monthly design-focused films, with The Royale’s Andrea Beesley for cult film screenings, and with local performance and comedy troupes.
Aubey notes on FilmBar’s Facebook page that a well-lit sign and lighted billboard with current screenings will be added to the outside of the 1966 building that was once home to Arizona Stamp and Engraving. He also writes he’s putting live entertainment programming on the backburner for a bit to focus on future films.
