We were 9 when we first read Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart, the first-person narrative of a madman’s guilty conscience. The old man is killed not for money, but for his terrifying evil eye, “all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it.” When the police come, the killer confuses his own thumping chest for the dead man’s and cries out, “Tear up the planks! Here, here!” Delightfully horrendous!
Heart and other works from Poe’s sublimely tender collection will be translated madly by the likes of Johnathan Standifird, Robert X. Planet and Roxanne DeWinter, and The Klute during The Poe Show, presented by Valley literary collective Anthology, Inc. in honor of the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan’s birth. Also planned: cinematic works by Kevin Patterson and Sharon Skinner and The Nelsonettes and a musical performance by Ryan Avery’s Nightwolf. Proceeds benefit Anthology.
