The Phoenix Mercury won two titles in three years. Diana Taurasi is the league’s premier player, and the Mercury beefed up their roster when they signed Candice Dupree. Nonetheless, this year’s team is still an unknown. The Mercury has to prove that it can win a title without Cappie Pondexter — who forced a trade to New York last March.
Their opening win against the L.A. Sparks was a positive sign for the team, but the Mercury will face another big test when they host the Atlanta Dream. The Dream’s squad is young but extremely well-coached — head coach Marynell Meadors is the reigning WNBA Coach of the Year. With All-Stars Erika de Souza and Sancho Lyttle in the frontcourt, it has the firepower to bully the Mercury in the paint.
