The gloomy works of 19th century Russian playwright Anton Chekov aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. So we’re glad that Christopher Durang’s made a spiked punch of the Russkie’s characters in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which opens on Thursday, October 9.
Durang’s got a steady hand for satirical theater that’s sharp, raucous, and absurd, as evidenced by Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike winning the Tony Award for Best Play in 2013. The tale sees Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia deep in midlife crises and whittling away their existence in the house of their dead parents in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Masha, their sister and a self-absorbed star of the silver screen, visits for the weekend, upending their rural stillness.
