It’s not what you think. Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room (Or the Vibrator Play) is, like so much of the playwright’s work, a smart and compassionate look at the mistreatment of women in the late 19th century. Set in a spa town near New York, Vibrator isn’t about dildoes but about the advent of electricity in the late 1800s — specifically in the homes of the wealthy. The aptly named Dr. Givings is a gynecologist who treats “female hysteria” in his home, with a strange new electric-powered contraption that has the whole town talking.
