Modern celebs are always milking the goodwill angle, whether they’re adopting African babies, playing charity concerts for tsunami relief, or making documentary videos about Darfur. But it wasn’t always about good press. In the late ’60s, WWII hero and International Rescue Committee rep Varian Fry assembled a collection of flight-themed artworks donated by a dozen immortals, many of whom were among the 3,500-plus refugees the committee helped relocate to the U.S. during the Nazi occupation. Check out this amazing portfolio in the “Flight: Chagall, Miró, and the Plight of Refugees” exhibit. The show features 11 lithographs and one serigraph by 20th-century masters including Jacques Lipchitz, Vieira da Silva, and the title artists.
