Calling all pirates, hippies, flappers, and time travelers: the time has come to explore downtown Phoenix and win some prizes for a good cause.
The Yancy Martin Carlos Avery’s Time Travel Treasure Hunt is a massive scavenger hunt that the YMCA will kick off on Saturday to encourage exploration of historical landmarks and local businesses in Phoenix.
Teams of up to four people dressed in some sort of period theme will be given a map at the starting place of Jobot around 10 a.m.
Participants then have four hours to follow various clues and fulfill tasks, from picking weeds at a community garden to taking a picture with someone at a local pub, for points.
Use of public transportation is encouraged and cars are strictly forbidden.
The hunt is scheduled to end at 2 p.m. at The Lost Leaf, where points will be tallied up and prizes will be given away to the first, second, and third place winners, as well as an award for best costume.
According to a coordinator for the event, Meghan McGilvra, there will also be prizes awarded for various “hidden” or random tasks that competitors fulfill on their hunt. Some of the prizes include two-night hotel stays and gift cards to local businesses participating in the event.
Competitors can RSVP to the event ahead of time through the Time Travel Facebook event page or register the day of the hunt.
Entry fees are $50 per person and all proceeds go toward the YMCA Strong Kids and Families campaign.
