Some jukebox musicals try to wrap an invented storyline around an oeuvre of pop hits, but Dream a Little Dream doesn’t have to resort to that, because the events of The Mamas and the Papas’ years in the limelight are dramatic enough for anybody. Papa Denny Doherty co-wrote the script for the show, which Phoenix Theatre is reviving through Sunday, May 20.

The seminal folk-rockers lived hard, ran with other famous folk like Dylan and the Stones, and broke each other’s hearts with regularity while producing hits like “Monday, Monday” and “California Dreamin’.” According to Doherty (among others), if you really experienced the ’60s, you don’t remember them, so this nostalgia trip is suitable for every generation. Wrap yourself in paisley, fringe, and idealism for the opening performance.

Wednesdays, Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 3 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.; Tue., May 8, 7:30 p.m. Starts: April 25. Continues through May 20, 2012
