We know, we know: “a puppet show”?
Think Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers or the Tony award-winning Avenue Q on a smaller stage with equally ill-behaved marionettes. Because while it’s likely been years since Jim Henson’s famed Muppet collective entertained you, puppet shows aren’t just for children anymore — and the edgy, short skits showcased in this month’s puppet slam are proof of that.
Produced by the Great Arizona Puppet Theater in conjunction with the nationwide Puppet Slam Network, these oft-monthly adult-themed slams are played to an audience that appreciates the bizarre, presented in hand-held miniature. Past shows have included crass cabarets and quirky, sidesplitting productions. Each is created independently, promising doses of thought provoking plays hidden amongst the dirty jokes. Definitely leave the kids at home.
Curtain goes up at 8 p.m. Friday, September 5, and Saturday, September 6, at the Great Arizona Puppet Theater, 302 West Latham Street. Tickets to the 18-and-over show are $10 in advance and $12 on the day of performance. Adult beverages are available for purchase.
