While Hollywood was experiencing an artistic low point in 1970 (think Weekend with the Babysitter), American avant-garde filmmaker Hollis Frampton created Zorns Lemma and turned experimental filmmaking on its celluloid ass.
Called “an exercise in mathematical logic in cinema,” Zorns Lemma features an evolving alphabet composed of New York City street signs. Along with the nine-minute Gloria!, Frampton’s films complement SMoCA’s “southwestNET: photography and video” exhibition. A discussion from artist and filmmaker David Sherman and assistant curator Claire Carter follows the screenings.
