Animated films aren’t limited to childish portrayals of fairy tales and stories of living toys or a cute clownfish abducted from his ocean home. Emotionally charged, aesthetically diverse and occasionally raw, good animation unhinges the doors of the mind and lets the inmates out to mingle.
Such is the case with the Nine Nation Animation West film festival, a collection of nine award-winning animated films from nine countries in which Chinese monks and Buddhas, two blue-collar workers and one self-destructive book of matches confront dysfunction, normality and the strange journeys that circumscribe a life. Titles include Belgian flick Flatlife by Jonas Geirnaert and The Tale of How by South Africa’s The Blackheart Gang.
