New Times has confirmed with Roosevelt Row CDC that Phoestival, the vendors and street closure portions of First Friday, will not be happening during this month’s artwalk on Friday, September 3.
“It’s still on hiatus. There are public safety issues with the new layout,” says Cindy Dach of Roosevelt Row CDC. “[Phoestival] may move to another day such as second Saturday to separate it from Artlink First Friday and bring another event downtown, but it could also return in a new layout.”
This means that Phoestival, which didn’t happen in July and August, will take a three-month vacay that could extend through the fall.
Since its inception in November 2009, Phoestival has seen many supporters and dissenters. On the one hand, casual artwalkers seem to heart many of the dollar-store-quality goods as well as the Indian fry bread stand. But on the other, some longer-standing attendees haven’t been feeling the carnival-like atmosphere one bit.
