Few celebrities have attained the carte blanche sufferance that Bill Murray enjoys.
Every facet of his closely scrutinized life, praiseworthy or bothersome, seems only to bolster the iconic actor’s already enormous popularity. Always endearing, even when cavalier, Murray has managed to supersede acting altogether. Characters and scripts are mere formalities for Bill these days. The shy-towner’s beloved persona allows him to make a living by just being himself, and no one has captured this more artfully than director Wes Anderson.
In the auteur’s 2004 dramedy, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Murray — under Anderson’s direction — portrays an outlandish titular oceanographer on a blood hunt for a mythical Jaguar Shark. He somehow pays homage to Jacques Cousteau while creating a compelling and enigmatic character in Zissou, without ever missing a single Murray beat.
The Royale, 108 West Main Street, will go for a deep-sea dip when it screens the flick as its monthly “Cult Classics” series at 9 and 11 p.m. on Friday, September 23.
