Summer’s around for a few more weeks, which means plenty of time to get creative (and finish a few projects) before the school year kicks in and the weather cools down.
Lucky you, there happen to be a handful of great opportunities for local artists to have their work displayed and recognized.
From paintings to posters to films, here are five current “Calls for Artists.”
Zia Record Exchange: Call for Films (deadline: September 1)
The Zia Records chain is gearing up for their third annual Zia Records Film Fest and their second DVD film compilation, You Saw Us Back When: Zia Film Fest Compilation Vol. 2. They are currently taking submissions from filmmakers in the Las Vegas, Tucson, and Phoenix areas. Submissions can be movie trailers, short films, music videos, or animation (in any genre), but must not be longer than 10 minutes and must be submitted in DVD format only. Entry forms are available at all Zia locations, and also online.
Copper Star Coffee: Art Challenge (deadline: Prior to First Friday, August 5)
Copper Star, one of the hippest coffee shops in town, is currently advertising for artists on their Facebook page.
This year, make your gift count –
Invest in local news that matters.
Our work is funded by readers like you who make voluntary gifts because they value our work and want to see it continue. Make a contribution today to help us reach our $30,000 goal!
They’re seeking people who can cover the shop’s “naked walls” with art in just three days. The chosen artists will get a month of gallery space and a First Friday opening party.
To submit work, send samples to copperstargallery@gmail.com, along with an estimate of how much of Copper Star’s walls you think you can fill.
For its third annual poster exhibition, the folks who run Phoenix Design Week are seeking submissions on theme of “Perception.” The theme is open to interpretation, given designers follow the poster template on the PDW website.
Winning entries will be displayed on the website, and some winning selections will also be printed and shown at an exhibition space during Design Week.
Hugo’s “Dia de los Muertos” Show (no deadline given; the show is slated for November 5)
Local artist Hugo is seeking musicians, poets, artists, and dance groups for a “Dia de los Muertos” charity exhibition at the Phoenix Public Market on First Friday, November 5.
Hugo requests that artists be willing to create “live art” (an alter or interactive piece) at the show, beginning at 8 p.m. and finishing no later than 8 a.m. the next day. The art created will be auctioned off to benefit Alzheimer’s research. Artists and performers interested in participating should e-mail Hugos.place@gmail.com.
John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships (deadline: September 17)
The Memorial Foundation provides fellowships and grants to “advanced professionals” in many fields, including the creative arts.
The fellowships are awarded through a competition, and last from six to twelve months. Grant amounts vary. The Foundation’s website states, “Applicants should have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.”
