Wiggle into those smarty pants, here are five lectures that’ll stretch your brain in Feburary.
bell hooks @ ASU West
Author and activist bell hooks skewers the Oscar-nominated, racially controversial novel-to-blockbuster The Help in a lecture in the University Center’s La Sala ballroom at ASU’s West Campus on Tuesday, February 14.
Through a lens examining race, class, and gender, hooks will discuss the impact of The Help and its role in reinforcing societal oppression. Admission is free, and the event, which begins at 3:30 p.m., is open to the public. See more here.
Science and Religion: How can we piece it all together? @ Arizona Science Center This panel discussion, which includes John Lynch of ASU’s Barrett Honors College, will address the contentious topic of reconciling God and evolution. The Arizona Science Center-hosted talk is free, begins at 7 p.m., and is open to the public.
Cat Mojo 101 @ Franciscan Renewal Center
Cuckoo cats can make life hellish, whether they’re shredding the couch or literally biting the hands that feed them.
Luckily there’s a feline equivalent to the Dog Whisperer, and his name is Jackson Galaxy.
Galaxy hosts the Animal Planet program My Cat from Hell, and on Friday, February 17, at the Franciscan Renewal Center, the goateed cat coddler will give a talk on the history of domesticated kitties, discuss common behavioral problems, and wrap up with a question-and-answer session.

Vincent Desiderio @ ASU’s Coor Building
World-renowned figurative painter Vincent Desiderio will speak in a public lecture presented by ASU’s Drawing and Painting program on Tuesday, February 21, at 7 p.m. in room 170 of the Coor Building. Admission is free.
Beyond the Phoenix Lights — Coincidence or Connection? @ Fort McDowell Resort and Casino
One of the many lectures given during the International UFO Congress will be Dr. Lynne Kitel’s presentation on the famed Phoenix Lights on Thursday, February 23, at Fort McDowell Resort and Casino. Admission for that day of lectures is $60, and full festival passes are $325. See more here.
