Bare: The Musical is not about getting naked. Instead of tits and ass, this contemporary tuner offers tightly wound commentary about the influence of Catholicism and the evils of peer pressure in the modern world. Its story concerns a cadre of Catholic boarding-school students who tunefully attempt to fight the evils of pleasure and impiety while also questioning the righteous religious beliefs they’ve held all their lives.
The story follows Peter and Jason, a couple of homosexual altar boys (say it isn’t so!) whose newfound love is the source of all kinds of soul-searching and power ballads about whether it’s okay to be a fruit. There are sexy raves and angry nuns and a whole lot of cross-imagery in Jon Hartmere Jr. and Damon Intrabartolo’s nearly 10-year-old musical, which has traveled the globe, often playing to sold-out houses.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 9, 6 p.m. Starts: July 16. Continues through Aug. 9, 2009
