Social networking has helped to create a phenomenon where we’re constantly turning the cameras on ourselves in search of pics for blogs and profile pages. Of course, we’re not the first generation to incorporate portraits into our daily lives.
In a letter to Diego Rivera, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo wrote, “I leave you my portrait so that you will have my presence all the days and nights that I am away from you.” A group of 11 Valley artists called the Phoenix Fridas (including Smoker Frida, Beader Frida, Panchita Frida, etc.) continue Kahlo’s legacy of self-expression through brave self-portraits — in all their colorful suffering and sexy surrealism — in the group exhibit “I Leave You My Portrait” at Vision Gallery.
This year’s version of their annual Frida tribute show includes a recreation of Kahlo’s bedroom, mixed-media artworks, and altars. “Crafty Frida” Kathy Cano-Murillo says that for some of the Fridas it’s about art; for others, activism or female empowerment.
