Being that Phoenix natives are as elusive as the Sasquatch (or millionaires who pay adequate taxes), many Valley residents have never even heard the name Jack Durant. But one moniker even the greenest transplant will recognize is that of Bugsy Siegel, the notorious mobster who was one of Durant’s best friends.
Learn about the late Phoenix-area restaurateur’s mob connections and more in Terry Earp’s In My Humble Opinion, opening Thursday, April 26, at Playhouse on the Park. Based on the book by Mabel Leo, the play chronicles Durant’s rise from small-town Tennessee boy to Vegas pit boss to owner of the downtown watering hole that served the likes of Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and Clark Gable.
Carefree Theatre Company’s production stars Robert G. Bledsoe as the less-than-humble man who publicly declared his own restaurant “the finest eating and drinking establishment in the world.” Considering Durant’s reputation, he’d be thrilled with the attention Earp’s show lavishes on the still-operating local landmark.
