Garry Shandling has died at the age of 66, according to TMZ. The cause of his death has not been made public at this time.
The comedian, writer, and actor, who grew up in Tucson and attended the University of Arizona, wrote for television shows including Welcome Back, Kotter before starring in two premium cable series.
The fourth-wall-breaking meta-comedy It’s Garry Shandling’s Show ran from 1986 to 1990 on Showtime. On HBO from 1992 through 1998, The Larry Sanders Show skewered late-night TV. The show influenced uncomfortable HBO comedies that followed, including Curb Your Enthusiasm.
