Arizona artist Ron Burns doesn’t paint dogs in bowler hats playing cards — that would be too easy. Focusing on man’s best friend at his best, worst, and when working hardest, Burns’ use of bright, Day-Glo-esque colors amazingly captures Fido’s personality and expression. Burns happened into this second career by chance. As an outlet from his corporate lifestyle, Burns painted Rufus, his puppy. Other dogs followed, and after selling several paintings Burns realized his colorful canvas dogs were desirable. Yet he couldn’t paint just any dog. Burns settled upon shelter dogs as subjects, eventually becoming the only artist in residence for the United States Humane Society. Following 9/11 Burns zeroed in on all aspects of working dogs. His current show, “The Dogs of Ron Burns,” is a career retrospective — and yes, there are a few cats too.
