The exhibit “Geoffrey Beene: Trapeze” is neither a fashion show nor a high-wire act. It’s a tribute to the pioneering fashion designer who turned dressmaking into a high art. Beene, who died in 2004, was often criticized for his irreverent designs and sharply tailored men’s suits. Among his many champions is dance maven and publisher Patsy Tarr, whose custom-made wardrobe is the centerpiece of this exhibition.
The Phoenix Art Museum hosts Jade Hobson, former creative director at Vogue, who will guide visitors through the exhibition during the “Geoffrey Beene: A Celebration of an American Icon” lecture and tour. Her reign coincided with the height of Beene’s career in the 1980s. She’ll share personal and professional memories of the man.
