Gold is, if nothing else, covetable. Folks rushed to California in the mid-1800s to find their own pieces of it. Modern-day moguls count it as the most popular precious metal to invest in. And gold belongings long have been seen as a symbol of wearable wealth – whether its a grill fronting your teeth or a bracelet dangling from your wrist.
But gallery owner Bentley Calverley hopes that the exhibition “Gold Rush,” now on view at Bentley Gallery, shines a new light on the mined substance. “Gold inescapably triggers reactions, a potential which the artists participating in this exhibition address in diverse ways,” Calverley says via press release. “The works in ‘Gold Rush’ demonstrate that in contemporary art, the use of gold is not limited by subject matter, form, or style.”
Among the 15 artists showing gold-infused works in the group show are Makoto Fujimara, Olga De Amaral, and Martin Cary Horowitz. The metallic exhibition is on view at 215 East Grant Street through January 4, 2014. Hours Saturday, December 16, are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.
