Metal is good. Scandinavian death metal, even better. How about a Finnish death ensemble that sings songs about trolls clashing with Christian missionaries? The best thing ever?
Not quite, but Finntroll, which growls out tales about characters from Norse mythology that battle religious wingnuts, is pretty freaking good. Hailing from Helsinki, this seven-piece group fuses a Finnish folk music dubbed humppa with death vocals sung in Swedish that, at times, bubble into screamo territory. Despite various dramas (numerous lineup changes, once due to the death of guitarist Teemu Raimoranta, who fell off a bridge) the formula continues to work well, especially on the band’s latest effort, Nifelvind (released in Finland in February), which translates to “Wind of Hell.”
