Twenty years ago, a cushy desk job sounded appealing to most college grads. Now, more and more graduates across the globe are avoiding cubicle hell by working for themselves — even if it means lousy pay and strange hours. “The thought of ending up in an ad agency as a ‘desktopper’ really frightened me, so I decided to pursue my dreams to become a freelancer,” says Danish artist Miss Lotion. Her decision paid off. Since graduating from graphic design school in 2007, Miss Lotion’s whimsical cartoon-like illustrations have been featured on t-shirts, in Modart magazine, in the Latex for Fun book, and at several collaborative exhibits. How’d she get the name Miss Lotion? “I was [nicknamed] ‘Lotion’ back in design school by a Norwegian girl who thought I had great skin,” she explains. “Then everybody started calling me Lotion!”
