Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex isn’t exactly bedtime story material. With a plot that includes child rape, murder, and an incestuous relationship that would make anyone but the deepest Southerner blush with shame, there’s no way that even the trained whitewashers of Disney could make the classical Greek tragedy PG.
So it’s no surprise that Nearly Naked Theatre’s production of Oedipus for Kids! isn’t actually fodder for the preschool set. The tongue-in-cheek musical follows three members of the fictional Fuzzy Duck Theatre Company as they attempt to present a family-friendly Oedipus complete with such catchy tunes as “My Lover is My Husband is My Son.”
“If someone brings a young child, I assume they will be turned away,” says leading lady Johanna Carlisle. “The show uses explicit language and situations. You see the onstage kids’ show, and then the crazy offstage reality starts to spill onstage.”
