Think of Phoenix as a spreading pool of concrete founded upon a desert. The cement on which we build our lives has come to seem as natural to us as the environment that it’s obscured, and this seemingly uni-functional substance is the main concern of the “Concretion – the sixth element” exhibit. Participating artist Steven Biltz, an MFA alumnus of ASU’s Herberger College of the Arts, directly interrogates the function of this urban material through his sculptures made of reclaimed concrete. His work will be shown alongside that of other Herberger graduate students, faculty, and alumni.
