If Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights is remembered more for the giant box of awards it’s amassed, it’s not because its story is dreary or forgettable. It’s just that In the Heights — which won the the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, as well as for Best Music and Lyrics, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestration — tells an overlapping, textured tale of a neighborhood community in New York’s Washington Heights. It’s a story told in music (award-winning music!) that presents three generations who spar, party, and struggle — all in honor of those who came before them.
Catch the road company of In the Heights (a show that won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, beating out cast recordings of The Little Mermaid, Young Frankenstein and 2008 revivals of Gypsy and South Pacific — oops! There we go with those awards again) that features some of the original cast.
