When you watch Columbian singer Shakira swing her hips on stage, you’d think she was the greatest thing to happen to belly dancing since the Victorians bastardized the traditional Middle Eastern dance by literally baring bellies. Yet the rules of the USA Belly Dance Queen 2012 Show at Wild Horse Pass are quite simple – no dances over five minutes, no inappropriate choreography, and no Shakira.

Who knew belly dancing could be so strict? The hip appreciators at The Arab American Association choose to get their belly on by the most traditional standards. If you plan on performing an Egyptian style of dance, then you best bring an Egyptian style of music. But hey, the competition isn’t all about being rigid, at least for spectators. A surprise celeb guest is scheduled to appear, plus attendees can loosen up among the show’s dance and jewelry vendors with a glass of wine from the bar.

Sat., Feb. 4, 7 p.m., 2012
