This day marks 65 years since the liberation of Auschwitz and museums in Spain, Canada, Hungary, Mexico, Kosovo, and Finland are joining the Phoenix Art Museum in a humanitarian chain for the realization of world peace.
The museums are screening Finnish filmmaker Rax Rinnekangas’ hour-long documentary The Colours of the Holocaust, which chronicles the shift from the birth of Aryanism in the 19th century to Nazism in the 20th century. This film, however, reminds us that this story didn’t happen overnight. Incidentally, it was not the black-and-white world portrayed by the bleak archival footage so familiar to us today. Rather, these evils unfolded under our own familiar blue skies and not, as the film says, “On a different planet.”
