Crazy as it sounds, there’s a lot of animals and creepy crawlers that are actually indigenous to the very desert that, well, most of us aren’t indigenous to. And wisely, we’ve followed the lead of all the clever desert dwellers who have thrived here for, like, millions of years, by only coming out at night during the summer, though the nocturnal similarities pretty much stop there.
Still, Phoenix’s Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 North Galvin Parkway, offers an opportunity for patrons to trade in an evening on the town for a night on the trail. Armed with nothing more than a flashlight, guests can rummage amongst the foragers and check out various discovery stations that shed some much needed light on what’s going on in the darkness around them. Both fun and incredibly terrifying, it’s the perfect way to spice up a summer night. Take a flashlight tour on Saturday, July 12, between 7 and 9 p.m. Admission varies from $10 to $22.
