Now that the snowbirds are gone, let’s talk. Everyone can enjoy our diverse desert landscape during the cooler months, but it takes real appreciation and conditioning to practice any kind of exertion when the furnace of the gods kicks on. Hikers, bikers, and runners who are as physically and mentally prepared as they can be get a true sense of accomplishment when daring to defy the summer heat. But even the year-rounders are scarce when the temps peak in the afternoon.

If you want to test your mettle or watch someone else do it, join the Scottsdale Beat the Heat Race on Saturday, June 22. It commemorates the record high temp of 122 degrees set in 1990. The run/walk is an 11.2K or 5K and it begins at 2:47 p.m., the time of day when the record was reached,. Both routes end at the WestWorld of Scottsdale, where participants can bask in the glory of sprinkler systems or plunge down a 40-foot inflatable water slide. The longer race’s top 10 finishers receive cash awards ranging from $92 to $1,990 and a luxury resort stay. Top finishers of both races will receive tickets to upcoming events.

Melt your sole at 16601 North Pima Road. Registration costs $50.38 to $62.60 for individuals and $201.52 to $250.40 for five-person teams. See details at www.scottsdalebeattheheat.com.
