Phoenicians might as well accept the sad truth: There isn’t much indie cred to living in the Valley, with all of its strip malls, strip malls, and, well, you get the idea.
Then there’s Local First AZ, an organization created by Stinkweeds/Modified Arts owner Kimber Lanning that recognizes and represents cool mom-and-pops. Lanning and company ditch the big-box vibe during their Certified Local Fall Festival. The fest highlights local independent businesses and showcases the goods and services they offer along with that rare indie cred we mentioned. This year’s event, the fourth in as many years, features Changing Hands Bookstore along with other Valley beloveds such as Copper Star Coffee, La Grande Orange, and Urban Cookies.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $15,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
