Native American Fashion blogger and scholar Jessica R. Metcalfe (Turtle Mountain Chippewa) has brought discussion about native appropriation to the fore in the past few years, calling out companies like Paul Frank and Urban Outfitters on her blog, Beyond Buckskin, raising awareness, pushing for change, and expanding that blog to include Beyond Buckskin Boutique, an online retail site that carries items made by an international group of native designers.
Plainly put: She’s an expert when it comes to native fashion. That’s why we’ll be all ears when Metcalfe lectures at Heard Museum North Scottsdale on Saturday, January 25.

Slated to close this May, Heard North has presented native-focused fashion programming, including fashion shows and exhibits like “American Indian Fashion,” which is currently on view.

In that vein, it hosts Metcalfe’s talk, “More Than Just a Trend: Rethinking the ‘Native’ in Native Fashion,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“I will be presenting on some of my favorite examples of traditional historical native adornment, a couple of the hot contemporary Native fashion designers, and native appropriations in mainstream fashion,” Metcalfe says via e-mail, adding that if there’s time, she’ll finish with a bit about what she does with Beyond Buckskin.
