There’s no shame in using household items for something other than their intended purpose. Perhaps you sing in the shower with a hairbrush subbing for a microphone or strum an air guitar broom. Or, if you’re gunning for a Darwin award, use screwdrivers to extract stuck bread from your toaster.
The good news is that you’re not alone. Newspapers, garbage can lids, and brooms are among the everyday objects repurposed to create percussive music in STOMP, on stage through December 31 at Gammage Auditorium in Tempe.
Eight performers “make a rhythm out of anything we can get our hands on that makes a sound,” says co-creator Luke Cresswell. The show’s latest incarnation features brand new paint can and monster-truck tire routines, plus a symphony of clicking and waving lighters that could rival an Aerosmith concert.
