Arizona Cactus League baseball is one of the most anticipated sports happenings in town. But around this time in March, we’re way more jazzed about practice ball ending and the Arizona Diamondbacks beginning regular-season play. That’s why we say enough already with miniature ballyards featuring used-up hurlers running foul-pole laps during games; enough with showing up only to find that half the team didn’t make the road trip from that dump down south; and enough with day games that attract out-of-towners, snowbirds, and Valley salesmen whose bosses believe their employees are out pounding the pavement. Yes, it’s actually time for game one at Chase Field! Oh, wait, it’s just another practice game. Damn. However, the final tuneup is against the Colorado Rockies, the dirt bags who swept the D-Backs in last year’s NLCS.
