Minority troops had seen a lot by the time they came home from World War II, and the status quo became a no-go, lighting a fire under the civil rights movement’s ass. The soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines also defended their country heroically, sometimes without even being citizens of the U.S. Letters from Rito, the newest history-based play from Arizona Curriculum Theatre, weaves these and many other threads into a compelling story.
Rito’s mom brought him and his sister up from Mexico as teensy tots. The grown-up siblings’ correspondence continued through Rito’s Army hitch and paints a vivid picture of ’40s culture, the events of the war, and the spirit and contributions of the more recent arrivals to our immigrant nation.
