Jonathan Winters was an American artist and comedian, dubbed the “Pioneer of Improvisational Comedy.”
Winters acted on stage and in films and television, including Stanley Kramer’s It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Twilight Zone. He was known as a comedic chameleon who slipped in and out of characters with ease. He died Thursday at the age of 87.
The comedian wasn’t one for one-liners, but he did leave us a few crumbs of wisdom.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $17,250 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
If your ship doesn’t come in, swim out to meet it.
When you wear so many hats in society, you never know who you are. That’s the beauty of it. Because once you find out who you are, you’re screwed. Nothing is impossible. Some things are just less likely than others.
