With the advent of reality television shows, a theater of the absurd seems like overkill. (Oh, would sweet Snooki awaken as the cockroach she surely represents!) Until then, Theater In My Basement continues to roll out the red carpet of deranged performances.
On Friday, November 12, the eighth annual Teatro Caliente begins its two-day deluge of experimental theater featuring writers, actors, and musicians performing with a facetious flair. For instance, TIMB founder and artistic director Chris Danowski revises the Odysseus and Calypso myth, and Austin Head glams up his latest album release Daeh Nitsua (the effort is a veritable “who’s that” of local waggish weirdos).
New Times had coffee with the high-minded Danowski. About the festival, he says, “There isn’t enough self-criticism in this town,” and that he likes actors “who can recognize their own iconicity and manipulate it.” Some of those actors on the bill are Jeff Falk, Ernesto Moncado, Barry Moon, Marcelino Quiñonez, Jonathan Hernandez, Wilana White Coyote, Wrara Plesoiu, and Steve Christensen.
