When it comes to talent, the apple usually doesn’t fall far from the tree. Will Smith’s son is a budding movie star, Muhammad Ali’s daughter kicks ass in the ring, and Miley Cyrus’s songs are as crappy as the tunes by her country crooner daddy.

Local artist Spencer Mahaffey-Maat didn’t expect to follow in her painter parents’ footsteps. “I always anticipated my rebellious streak to lead me down a different path with not so many artsy folks and perhaps a regular paycheck at the end,” she quips in her artist statement.

Apparently, her genetics were stronger than her will.

Catch Mahaffey-Maat’s watercolor paintings in “Mosaics,” currently on display at Duley-Jones Gallery. Her work features iconic images broken down into spirals and shapes, mimicking the look of a tile mosaic.
