The Odd Couple, most people’s favorite Neil Simon play, was also a classic film and a long-running sitcom. Sloppy, fun-loving Oscar Madison and meticulous, kinda anal Felix Ungar will always be our models for friends who become mismatched roommates. Once, it was unusual for post-collegiate adults to share an apartment platonically, but we’ve endured a couple of recessions (with both lowercase and capital Rs) since the ’60s, and living alone seems practically hedonistic nowadays.
Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon were perfect in the movie. Jack Klugman and Tony Randall are imprinted on our minds from the TV show. We can’t think whom we’d rather see direct local actors Gary Caswell and Matthew Cary as Oscar and Felix than Hollywood vet Don Bluth, who gently pushes the envelopes of dialogue, character, and physical comedy to squeeze out every honest laugh.
