Never trust a shapeshifter. One moment they could take the form of your best friend, learning all of your deepest, darkest secrets, and the next they could be a guido-fied, braggadocios replication of The Situation, dishing your dirt for the world to hear.
Sound advice, sure, but knowing whether or not the friend in question can, in fact, transform into another person is the trickiest part. In his new exhibition “Shape Shifter,” at After Hours Gallery, local artist Jason Smith outs those morphing tricksters, or at least what he envisions them to be. In Smith’s mind, there’s no doubt they look like graphic novel villains with mid-century modernist styling and bizarre. It’s friendly-looking enough to convince you that the subjects – who are somewhere between animal and human — are trustworthy.
