The worst: people declaring beliefs that perfectly aligns with feminist principles and then jettison responsibility with the tag line, “… but I don’t consider myself a feminist.” For the folks who aren’t afraid to celebrate the label, GRRL Fest beckons rebels with a cause this Saturday, October 12.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and GRRL Fest’s program of entertainment and interaction is an active way to educate and make positive change for women. Their literary discussion and ‘zine swap will feature works from DIY publishers and Nicole Zangara, author of Surviving Female Friendships: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly. Performances include spoken word from The Lisa Frank Poetry Collective, hoop dancing from the Heady Hoop Tribe, and music from Korbe Canida, The Pleasure Victims, and Sister Lip.
GRRL Fest is at Lawn Gnome Publishing, 905 North Fifth Street, from 4 to 10 p.m. Admission is $5; attendees who are 18 or younger get in free. For more info, visit www.facebook.com/lawngnomepublishing.
