Mercury’s not in retrograde and all seems normal on the astronomical charts, but through the lenses of highly specialized cameras, astronomers caught something slightly unusual on the Sun’s surface over the weekend.
Described by NASA as “a beautiful prominence eruption producing a coronal mass ejection (CME),” a chunk of matter shot off of the left side of the sun on April 16 at around 1:45 EDT.
CME’s are often associated with solar flares, or sudden brightening spots seen on the Sun’s surface. Sunday’s eruption happened at the same time as a medium-sided flare.
According to NASA, the CME was not aimed toward Earth.
