Like a secular Noah, George L. Ellis hand-built his Ark, the Scottsdale artist colony known as the Cattle Track Arts Compound, on the banks of the Arizona Canal beginning in 1937. Though he didn’t single-handedly found the Scottsdale arts scene, his numerous constructs housed many of the significant artists who did, including the great Philip Curtis. Learn more about the compound – still extant and run by Ellis’ daughter Janie – in the “Cattle Track Arts Colony: Cowboys and Images” exhibit.
