Laying outside in a T-shirt and shorts in the dead of winter is one of the benefits of surviving Phoenix summers. One downside? Unless you want to drive for six hours, there isn’t a wave-worthy body of water around.
Instead of being bummed out, hit the beach, at least sonically, at the Surf & Garage Cocktail Party. The bill, headlined by The Surfside IV, includes a full lineup of other Valley surf-rock bands, such as The Mod Zombies, The Rebel Set, and Thee Jaguar Sharks, who will be playing their first show. Sharks frontman Jim Miles convened the band, whose name recalls the elusive and mysterious deep-sea denizen in Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. “I started to really dig the first-wave surf music and started to head in that direction,” says Miles. “Musically, I follow wherever my heart leads, and for me, a guitarist, it just really fits.”
