Rainbows, hearts, symbols of man, a nude self-portrait? This out is so on.
With a ta-ta to 2010, Arizona artist Julio Cesar Rodarte ponders life and love in “The Gay Is Out!” exhibition about being, well, gay and out. In a collection of acrylic paintings that utilize dynamic shapes, patterns, and a screamingly bright color palette, Rodarte literally asks, “What is love?” in a work that uses graphic human forms to represent love and sex. Another boasts a stenciled, “I’m here, I’m queer, get used to it!” and shows the artist, clad in jean shorts and headphones, standing on a striped pedestal and surrounded by pink clouds.
