Independent Journalism in Phoenix Needs You
We need to raise $15,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
Chad Reed is the youngest over-the-hill superstar you’ll see in any sport not called gymnastics. Read just about any preview of this year’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championships, and you’ll get a strong impression that the two-time winner is in the twilight of his career. Hell, even the circuit’s official website describes Reed as an “elder statesman.”
Dude is only 28 years old.
The reason for Reed’s sudden aging is the burgeoning youth movement in AMA Supercross. Headlined by defending champion Ryan Dungey, who turned 21 last month, these young stars seem poised to take over the sport.
Whether greybeard Reed can hold off the whippersnappers during the AMA’s second race of the season will be determined at Chase Field. The gates open at 12:30 p.m. and the main event starts at 7.
