Whenever prolific local musicians Andrew Jemsek and Ryan Avery collaborate on some project, the results tend to be fascinating and often unusual. In 2006, they formed chaotic dance/noise duo Nightwolf, followed three years later by The Quest, a “sloppy and weird” two-piece cover act that gigged in eateries. The pair’s latest band, Drunk & Horny, is a bit of a departure from these previous efforts, more so in sound than in moniker.
“Aside from the disgusting name and some of the crass lyrics, it’s something even my own parents enjoy,” Avery says. “It’s musically pleasant and it’s cute and it’s catchy.” Ditto for its new CD, A Drunk & Horny Pool Party with Ryan & Andrew, which alternates between sleazy lounge ditties, gleefully folksy sing-a-longs, and Who-esque hard rock.
Their eclectic sounds become even more diverse when joined by a half-dozen other instrumentalists to expand into the Drunk & Horny Orchestra, which will perform during the duo’s CD release show on Sunday, May 12, at Crescent Ballroom, 308 North Second Avenue. Former Friends of Young Americans and Serene Dominic open the 8 p.m. show.
